While organizations vary greatly in how they define the term “employee engagement,” there is little doubt that companies of all sizes and across all industries value it tremendously. Whatever the definition used, employee engagement essentially boils down to the extent to which people are willing to give their “all” for the company.
Because the realities that surround employee engagement and the behaviors that evidence it are as individual as the people we so deeply rely upon, employee engagement is often used in a vague, generalized way. Or at the other extreme, it is quantified so formulaically that it fails to capture the “feel” of what it is to work and be a vital part of an engaging organization.
Organizations, like people, are living, breathing entities, with good and not-so-good days and moments. This variability is further compounded by all the relational factors that come in to play whenever groups are brought together to collaborate on common goals and objectives. The stress that this creates continuously puts you and your company at the great risk of “disengagement” from time to time. Being able to identify key areas of concern can be helpful as you strive to create the conditions for optimal employee engagement.
